I just read an article about him in Huffington Post that said he rarely reads a script and ad-libs most of his lines.
He just knows the premise of the movie and goes with it. The whole Cinderella Story scene in Caddyshack was ad-lib’d on the spot. Most of his lines in Ghostbusters were improvised.
